2024 ESRA Open Racquetball Championships

The 2024 National Racquetball Circuit kicked off with the ESRA Open Championships, held at Tonic Squash and Gym, Dromana on 17th – 18th February. While numbers were down on last year’s event with 51 singles and 58 doubles entrants a successful event was conducted, thanks in no small part to the welcoming environment created by host Amelia Martin and the Tonic family headed by tournament stalwart Matt Howard.
Several regular players were absent due to injury or competing commitments, but we welcomed first time tournament participants in most grades, along with some returning from long time injury.
It is great to see such classy player as Sam Ejtemai supporting the circuit and he proved too strong for the opposition accounting for Steve Andrewartha in the Men’s Open final. Amelia Martin won her 3rd ESRA Women’s Open title in a row beating a determined Zoe Shardlow in the final. Local pairing of Steve Andrewartha and Leon Crooke took out the Open Doubles.
The presentation ceremony also honored 2022 & 2023 National Circuit Champions. Winning players attending the ESRA tournament were presented with their trophies. Other winners will be presented at the next tournament they enter.
On Saturday night a large group dined out at the Dromana hotel. The food was good, and the comradery was even better. A big pat on the back to Ian Chalmers who did a lot of pre-tournament work, lobbying players, and collating entries.
The next event on the national calendar is the Wodonga Racquetball Championships on 15th – 16th March, followed by the Victorian Open in April.
