2023 Ballarat Racquetball Championships Review and Results

Published Mon 25 Sep 2023

The 2023 Ballarat Racquetball tournament was held at the Ballarat Squash & Racquetball Fitness Centre, Wendouree on 9th – 10th September 2023. The weather was not kind as it was extremely cold (even for Ballarat!), but thanks to the magnificent, heated club room, players were able to thaw out in between matches and watch the US Open tennis on the large TV. Our numbers were down a bit from last year with 36 singles and 38 doubles players (39 and 48 in 2022). Host Tara Pilven and Tournament Director, Leon Faustini, did a wonderful job setting up the tournament and providing the rather unique trophies to the winners (see the photos below, the trophies change colour every minute and came with a remote and charger!!). Also thanks to Marilyn Anderson, who volunteered to run the canteen all weekend and kept every one fed.

In the Men’s Open, fresh off winning his first racquetball tournament last month In the Qld Open, top ranked Victorian Squash player, Sam Ejtemai, backed up again easily accounting for his oppenents in the Men’s Open, showing that squash and racquetball skills are quite complementary to each other. We are hoping that he can face off against Cam in the near future! Unfortunately, we only has one woman entrant, who played in B Grade. The Open doubles was taken out by Geoff Wilcock and Mark Ascoli, who scraped in to win the final 22-21 in the third!
