Squash Vic and MS Australia are pleased to announce Mega Squash for MS 2012 will be held at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre from 12 noon on Saturday 21 April to 12 noon Sunday 22 April.
The Mega Squash event will bring teams of up to 15 participants to play squash (or racquetball) over a period of 24 hours. Each team must have a player on court at all times during the 24 hours. Teams are also tasked with the challenge of raising funds for people living with MS and there are awards for the team and individual raising the most funds. Squash Vic has set a target of $20,000 for the event and hopes all squash centres/clubs and players will get behind this worthy cause.
Sarah Fitz-Gerald is the ‘face’ of the event and said recently “the 24 Mega Squash will be a fantastic event for people of all fitness levels and will provide opportunities for some truly inspirational people who are living with a really difficult disease. Last year was a fantastic start and I’m looking forward to seeing more teams, especially some country ones, enter the event.”
Did you know?
* The average diagnosis of MS is 30 years old.
* MS affects three times as many women as men.
The 24 Hour Mega Squash event raises funds for MS Australia's 'Go for Gold' Scholarship program. 'Go for Gold' scholarships are awarded to people living with Multiple Sclerosis covering a broad range of categories including education, travel, sport, music, the Arts and employment. MS Australia aims to minimise the impact of multiple sclerosis on all individuals affected by the disease, their families, carers and the community by offering a wide range of assistance, services and equipment.
MS Australia's goal is to assist everyone affected by MS to live life to their full potential and secure the care and support they need, until we ultimately find a cure.
How does it work?
Teams can have up to 15 participants - of any ability, this is about participation - and at least one player from the team must be on court at all times. Play will be conducted in 13 minute blocks and scoring will be point-a-rally. At the conclusion of each 13 minute block, the player with the most points must record the score on the official scoresheet, there is a 2 minute break and then the next 13 minute block will commence. It is up to the Team Captain to establish the strategy and style of play for their team and set the team playing roster -participants can play for as little as thirteen minutes or up to two hours at a time.
Player Pack, Trophies and Prizes
All registered participants will receive a player pack containing the official event t-shirt and other giveaways. 'Spot prizes' will be randomly drawn every hour during the event with some great prizes already donated by our sponsors.
Trophies will be provided for:
- the winning team (this will be determined by both the total $ raised by the team as well as by total points won over the 24 hour period)
- the individual who raises the most $
- a youth encouragement award
- NEW for 2012, the Mega Squash Cup – to be awarded to the venue that raises the most $
Staying Overnight
If you and your team want to stay at MSAC for the duration of the event, there will be a 'sleeping area' set up. You will need to bring a sleeping bag, inflatable mattress and pillow.
Refreshments
The MSAC cafe will be open for business plus the Kiwanis Service Club will be providing some sandwiches etc during the period when the cafe is closed, catering both for the squash players as well as swimmers participating the Mega Swim event. Drink machines and a water fountain are available in the squash court area however you may want to bring your own refreshments.
Fundraising
This is a fundraising event for Multiple Sclerosis Australia. The venue, coordinators, prizes, etc are all being donated and it is hoped all players will fundraise for their team. Once registered, each participant will have their own web page set up by MS Australia and receive information and advice on how to do it!
Further information and details on how to register your team are available at www.megaswim.com/enter-msac-squash.asp
